It was built in 1863 according to a design by Viennese architect Franz Macher in the Moorish-Byzantine style in place of an earlier original synagogue which no could no longer hold the capacity of worshippers. Services were held until 1940. The extraordinary building was saved from demolition during the Nazi occupation thanks to becoming an exhibition space for museum displays.
The synagogue commemorates a Jewish community which arrived in Hranice in the early 17th century and had a relatively strong influence in the town in the 19th century, especially in the development of industry.
The building is closed to the public.
